About this event
"Secret stuff you already know but don't know you know it."
-Presented by Ed Pretty
I'm basing this demo on what has effectively become my lesson plan for teaching new turners. It's a list of techniques I call "Ten Things" (but there are a few more). I'm going to "reverse engineer" that for existing turners by looking at it from a problem-solving perspective and ask questions about problems that I know people will have experienced. For instance, "Anybody ever ruin the rim of their bowl on the last few cuts on the inside of the bowl? Here's why that happens and here's how to prevent that from happening again."
Included but not limited to:
I explain catches by illustrating the two easily understandable causes, so that's a huge help (sidebar - I show the secret to having complete confidence in using a skew).
I talk about the two different jobs that your hands have (a big deal but even bigger deal to left handers).
I explain why the tool rest is a tool rest, not a tool guide.
I may even call people up to try out what I am explaining.
